Greetings Saltlings! I just want to begin by saying I saw Captain America: Civil War yesterday and it was amazing! Black Panther was fantastic, and Spider-Man stole the show. The Russo brothers did an amazing job at making both sides very agreeable. After the movie was over I could not decide which team to side with. Ugh I can not stop nerding over how awesome it was, I may have to go see it again.
So this Friday I spent my evening at my LGS Jack’s On Queen. Two events fired, standard and modern, with me selling my standard deck at the GP, I participated in modern. I am currently in the process of completing my prerequisites for writing my MTG level one judge test, and as per the prereqs, I have to be the head judge at two sanctioned regular REL events. May 6th was my second night judging. As per REL rules, I was allowed to judge and play in the event.
Round 1; Win in 3 vs Infect
Infect is one of my better matches. Being able to pick pump spells out of my opponent’s hand, and being able to stack kill spells on top of pump spells is a plus. Also, my sideboard is quite well equipped to deal with infect. Using Infinite Obliteration to pick the only two creatures that infect uses, Blighted Agent and Glistener Elf, really throws their win conditions out of the window. Sure they still have Inkmoth Nexus, but that is what Ghost Quarter is for.
Round 2; Loss in 2 vs Boggles
What in the heck is this jank tier three list. Slippery Bogle? Whaaaaaat? Goodness this is the nearly on affinity level cheese. Hexproof? Sure. First strike? Trample? Lifelink? Ok. Protection from creatures? Totem armor? I’m pretty done. I think I need maybe one Devour Flesh in the sideboard, maybe two. I need to play against this deck more to make sure.
P.S. Keith, extra salt just for you buddy.
Round 3; Win in 3 vs Merfolk
The event began with an even number of players. After round one someone dropped, forcing Jack’s owner Kim to jump into the fray to take their place. We got paired together in round three, and once I saw the fish, my heart sank. HA PUNS. Game one I managed to get ahead of the merfolk, killing the little fishies one by one until I managed to get there. Game two I got fish lorded. I could not keep up with the level of merfolk fish slapping me in the face, thanks Kim! Unfortunately we did not manage to make it to game three. Standard finished at this time, and Kim had to run the store. Next time we will finish our brutal duel!
Round 4; Loss in 3 vs B/W Rally
Mr. Nathon Cook. Always bringing the brews. Game one was insane. I cast Oblivion Sower and my opponent peels four Zulaport Cutthroats off the top of his library. Which, considering I was at four life, would have been the death of me. Game two I just got overrun. Game three, I stuck a Tainted Remedy and passed. However, unlike the cutthroats, his other drain outlets are “may” gain life, so it was not very effective. I just got drained so hard, and I couldn’t keep up.
My final record was 2-2 and I felt my deck performed as well as it could. I just need to continue to alter my sideboard to change with the meta at the store. Stay tuned for the second installment of MTG Discount Brewhouse featuring the above B/W Rally!
Until next time, stay salty my friends.
